Let me tell you a story about my classmate whose “special ability” I envy.
Recently, my classmate was tidying up our recyclables when a flash of gold caught her eye. It was a candle holder with gold flowers, but it looked a little old because plastic gems were missing from the spots that once held them, and the glass container for the candle was also missing. Maybe that’s why it was thrown away. It didn’t look as pretty without the gems.
However, she who has an eye for beauty saw another world and another possibility.
“Well, that can be fixed easily”, she thought. It was so like her to see how old, broken things could still be used with a bit of fixing and modification, just like how she appreciates and cherishes her old clothes genuinely as long as they could still be worn.
After washing the candle holder she found in the recycle bin, she picked out a few shining stones from her collection of bits and pieces and stuck them on with glue. She also found a glass just about the right size to fit in it as a container for the candle.
When she showed me her work, her whole face was radiating with joy. And I’m sure if someone liked it, she’d give it away without hesitation, because she didn’t want it for herself in the first place. She just thought that it would be a pity to throw it away and wanted to make the most of it by fixing it.
Interesting enough, the same candle holder, with missing plastic germs, that was trash to someone was beautiful and useful to another. I couldn’t help but think: Could I, like my friend, see the value in something that doesn’t seem good at first sight? Perhaps beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but more so in the heart of those who look for it in the least expected places!
Through her eyes, I realized that our lives are filled with overlooked beauty. As long as we look carefully and discover, those seemingly ordinary things can shine with amazing brilliance just like this candle holder.
